Hello there, I have two Venoms, Two Axial Wraiths and an Axial Scorpion.

Venoms are OK but Axials are much better, simpler, less moving parts and much quiet.

The German WW2 Rock Crawler on the photos above on the prior posting from Sunday's activity is an Axial Scorpion, the Armored Personnel Carrier is a Venom Creeper.

If I had to choose would choose Axial Scorpion everytime.
Venoms are noisy, have more moving parts in the Tranny than Axials. Parts are not easily available in-town.
Axials are much simpler and efficient, not so noisy as Venom Creepers.

Had to install Axcial Scorpion Springs on my Venom to help it perform , original springs are way too soft for the Crawling we do. Noticed that my Venom Creepers get stuck on rocks by the undercarriage.( Skidplate)

The Axial Scorpion is nearly unstoppable, quiet and simple, never had any issues with it or had to change anything nor any parts. It even goes where many "Axial Wraiths" don't.

Axials will give you the best bang for the buck. cheers

These are my two cents after trying both Rock Crawlers. Hope is of some use to you.

Regards, Erick...

@ jada - it depends on what you want to do, if you want to comp then go burg it is hands down the best comp crawler but its a kit and not for the one who does not want to do homework and to lay down at least 1000-2000 bux. If you want to scale the best performing scaler and best parts support and aftermarket parts is the axial scx10. Axial sells rtr SCX10's in the honcho and kits it will be the dingo.

The axial wraith is another option for a scaler as it sets its a class 3 scaler so you could add rear steer and dig but as it sets it is not legal for g6 comps

Hope this helps

Not to bash pickle but his experience in crawling is limited to a couple months, Jorge is the the man when it comes to crawlers he's been crawling for a long time and has seen this area of rc change. With my experience I've been crawling for like 3 yrs and in those 3 yrs it has changed so much. My son is in the finishing touches of his comp rig which is a burg and even though he is just 16, and Jorge would agree with me, he is very very versed in the burg he has done a ton of research on that platform and has a lot of hands on experience in buying building and crawling everything burg.

I'm not trying to bash or toot my own horn just wanted you to know some background on some of us

Ok so just to be sure I getting this right.....

Everyone agrees that the Axial SCX10 is the best bang for the buck scaler, and the close second if not equal is the Wraith.

Im not trying to do anything serious just yet but I would like to have some fun.So I will look into getting one or the other.

Thanks guys,

Jason

Jason, My favorite is the AX10 Scorpion Rock Crawler smaller than the Wraith less expensive and just as much fun, my son likes the Wraith which is much larger in size. These are great for the extreme Rock Crawling we normally do.
The AX10 Scorpion and Axial Wraith have larger tires and are have more flexible suspension system than the scalers.

Was shown that the Scorpion AX10 can be modified to become a Scaler by adding a scaler chassis since most parts are interchangeable and are the same as the Honcho. This mean that if in the future I want a scaler I could just modify my existing Scorpion to become a scaler truck.

For Scaler there is the Dingo and the Honcho SCX10 , both are scalers with same chassis but different body style. The Dingo is somewhat shorter. So technically the Honcho is best of the two.
These two are realistic to the real trucks, with limited suspension, smaller scale tires and handle like the real trucks.

Jorge and Icer- One are much knowledgeable of this than I am. They can offer you exact details. study

*** What I do with my Scorpion is to add a body while keeping the suspension the way it is, this way I get to have some fun climbing all over the place with a "Comp rig chassis" "disguised" as a scaler truck. *** bounce You may call me a cheater...but believe me it is lots of fun !! drunken

'67-'72 K5 Blazer Rock Crawler RC Body Axial Wraith AX10 SCX10 , here you may see some nice Chevy body styles, or follow this U-Tube link where they show how to install the body kit on the Wraith. Nice......

@ noir - there are no fun runs scheduled but there is a test and tune run at Tom mayes park on the 22nd if I'm not mistaken anyways its not this Sunday but 2 Sundays from now. You are welcome to join us. There is a thread post with dates and info on crawling here somewhere let me find a link

@ Roger - Tamiya makes that exact body. You would have to extensively modify the SCX10 chassis and links to get the correct wheelbase but it can be done.

Here is a pic of a yj that's kinda close to yours

Yes noir522 ,you are most welcome to come, bring your Wraith. There should be plenty of space to have fun with it. Also there is much to learn from watching the guys compete.
My kid is getting into Rock Crawling Comp , he will be with the Comp Team , I will be bringing some non comp Crawlers to try-out. rabbit

To the Team:

*** Maybe we should plan some fun runs on between since we now have other folk that want to enjoy the hobby on other than Competition Mode or I can volunteer to sponsor anyone that just want to do some Crawling around without disturbing the Competition Qual Event.*** What a Face

This may allow new folk get the feeling for Comp by watching or choose to enjoy their Crawlers without disturbing the Competition event. I strongly believe this would be a positive thing. cheers

Icer-one, Jorge, Poncho, Team would this be feasible? I volunteer to stay with whomever is not participating in the Comp event. Hmm...

@ Eric - there is not a problem with you putting on a trail run on your own or taking off on a trail run during an event if you are not gonna participate but i strongly encourage you to participate in the comps with your son even if its on the Scale side that way you get more experience and be part of the "team"

how tough is it to drive a comp rig by the way?

Roberto,

Typically 3 channels is enough, you want the 3rd. channel to be 3position but in some cases depending on your rig a 2 channel will work fine. I guess the most important thing is a esc with drag or hold brake and a good brushed motor for smooth throttle control the motor can be anything from a 55turn down to about 35turn and you want to keep your cog as low as possible with the most ground clearance you can get.

But if you can come out sunday an get a better exposure at all the different rigs

You need at least a 3ch radio if you have more thats ok also. Some use a 4ch along with a duel esc's so that they can do some mixing and get their rig to crawl better. 3ch is very good you might need a 3 position switch on your 3rd channel if you are using front and rear dig

Hope this helps
